Ingredients
Tamarind
The ingredient
Tamarind is a pod-like fruit with a brown, rough exterior and a sticky, date-like pulp inside. It tastes sweet and sour, making it versatile in various cuisines. An interesting point is that tamarind is a key ingredient in traditional Worcestershire sauce.
The benefits
In Ayurvedic medicine, due to its sour and heat-inducing properties, tamarind is used to balance kapha (earth and water) and pitta (fire and water) doshas (energies or substances). It is believed to aid digestion and help cleanse the body by flushing out toxins. Some research studies have supported possible benefits of tamarind including:
- High in magnesium – which many people lack
- Possible antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial effects
- May promote brain health
