The humble onion is one of the most popular ingredients in the world. And for good reason: its versatile, sharp and savory flavor enhances a wide range of dishes. It can also be used raw or cooked to achieve flavors ranging from spicy to sweet. Onions are the bulbs of the onion plant, which has been cultivated for at least 7,000 years. It’s used extensively in Indian cuisine.

The benefits

Onions are widely regarded as a healthy food. In Ayurvedic tradition, it is used to balance the vata (air and space) dosha (subtance or energy). In traditional medicine, it is also used for a wide range of benefits including treating headaches, fevers, and toothaches.
