The ingredient

Fennel seeds are greenish-brown with a slight yellow tinge. These small, elongated seeds offer a sweet, anise-like flavor. Fennel seeds are often chewed on as a breath freshener and digestive aid after meals in India.

The benefits

Known for its cooling effects, fennel balances the pitta (fire and water) dosha (energy or substance) and aids digestive health. It is also used to soothe the digestive tract and support respiratory health by clearing kapha (earth and water) from the lungs. Some research studies have supported possible benefits of fennel seeds including:

  • Improves digestion and reduces bloating
  • Acts as an antioxidant
  • May have estrogenic properties, benefiting women’s health
