The ingredient

Cloves are small, dark brown, and resemble tiny spikes. They have a strong, pungent, and sweetly aromatic flavor, which is why they are a key ingredient in spice mixes like garam masala. Cloves also have antiseptic properties and have historically been used for dental pain relief.

The benefits

Cloves are employed in Ayurveda to improve digestion and relieve toothache and pain. They also serve as an expectorant to clear kapha (earth and water) dosha (energy or substance) from the respiratory tract. Some research studies have supported possible benefits of cloves including:

  • Can kill bacteria, which may improve oral health
  • May help to regulate blood sugar
  • High in antioxidants
