Black cardamom is the seed pod of amomum subulatum. More importantly, it lends an intoxicating aroma and subtle smoky character to Indian cuisine. Larger than its green counterpart, black cardamom has a dark brown, rough exterior. It imparts a cool smokiness to dishes with a camphor-like flavor.
The benefits
In Ayurveda, black cardamom is appreciated for its warming properties that balance the kapha (earth and water) dosha (energy or substance). It’s used in formulations to enhance digestive fire and improve the absorption of nutrients, which is vital in Ayurvedic therapy.
